Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Unfried cost?
Unfried is a paid app: $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year. There's no free tier and no limited version, so you subscribe when you set the app up. One price, always, with no countdown offers and no discount for deciding faster. You can cancel anytime, and if you decide not to subscribe you can unlock your apps right from the subscribe screen, so Unfried never keeps your phone locked.
What if I don't want to subscribe?
You can unlock your apps straight from the subscribe screen. Unfried stops blocking anything, so we never leave your phone locked because you decided not to pay. Your fry, your streak and your setup are all kept, so if you subscribe later everything is where you left it.
How does Unfried track my screen time?
On Android, Unfried uses the UsageStatsManager API to read per-app usage data. On iOS, it uses the Screen Time API (DeviceActivityFramework). Both require your explicit permission, and all data stays on your device.
Why does Unfried need usage access permission?
Unfried needs to read your app usage statistics so it can calculate your fry's time bar. Without this permission, the app can't detect how much time you spend on tracked apps. You can grant this in your device's Settings.
My fry's health hit zero. What happens now?
Your fry gets fried and collapses, and your tracked apps lock. It can't die for good, so there's no new fry to start and nothing to buy back. Tap Unfry and do something else for a while: the moment that activity gives your fry any health, it wakes up and your apps unlock. The health bar also refills on its own the next morning, so a collapse never lasts more than a day. The one thing a collapse does cost you is your streak, which resets to zero.
Does my fry's health reset every day?
Yes. The bar refills to full every night at midnight, so one bad day never follows you into the next. During the day the only way to get health back is to tap Unfry and step away from your phone.
Can I change my difficulty?
Yes, in either direction, from Settings. The tier sets how many minutes of non-stop scrolling a full bar survives: Hardcore (30 minutes), Balanced (60), Chill (90), or Relaxed (120), shown in the app as 50, 100, 150 and 200 health points. Scrolling costs the same per minute on every tier, so a smaller tier just runs out sooner. You can move to a harder tier once a day, and only if the change leaves at least 15 minutes of buffer on today's bar so it can't collapse your fry on the spot. Moving to an easier tier takes a little longer, once every three days, so that giving yourself more time isn't something you can do in the middle of a scroll.
Does Unfried collect any of my data?
Your screen time data stays on your device — per-app usage, tracked apps, settings, streaks, fry history, and hats are all stored locally in SQLite and are never uploaded. Unfried does use a few third-party services for specific functions (RevenueCat for subscriptions, Firebase Firestore for version checks and optional feedback, PostHog and Firebase Analytics for product and advertising analytics). No accounts, no in-app ads, no selling your data. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
How do I add or remove apps from tracking?
On the home screen, find your tracked apps and tap Manage. You can add new apps to monitor or remove ones you no longer want to track.
Can I restore my data if I reinstall the app?
Since all data is stored locally on your device, uninstalling the app permanently deletes your data, including your fry, your streak, and your hats. Your subscription is separate and can be restored from the paywall screen, but the fry itself cannot be recovered. We recommend keeping the app installed.
Notifications aren't working. What should I do?
Make sure notifications are enabled both in your device's system settings for Unfried and inside the app under Settings. On Android, also check that battery optimization isn't preventing background activity. On iOS, ensure notifications aren't set to "Deliver Quietly."

Troubleshooting

Screen time data isn't updating:

  • Verify that usage access permission is granted in your device settings
  • On Android: Settings → Apps → Special access → Usage access → enable Unfried
  • On iOS: Settings → Screen Time → ensure Screen Time is enabled and Unfried has permission
  • Try restarting the app or your device

The app is crashing or freezing:

  • Make sure you're running the latest version of Unfried from the App Store or Google Play
  • Try force-closing and reopening the app
  • If the issue persists, reinstall the app (note: this will erase your local data)

Time bar seems inaccurate:

  • Your time bar is based on total tracked app usage vs. your daily limit
  • Check that the correct apps are in your tracked list (Settings tab)
  • Screen time data may take a few minutes to sync from your device's OS
